Senior Living in Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama: Dinner Table of the South

Founded in 1871, Birmingham boomed in the early 20th century when it became the center of production for the iron and steel industries. In the 1960s, it also became a focal point for the Civil Rights Movement. Known for its small-town charm, Birmingham is a sophisticated, diverse international community with a rich history of Italian, Lebanese, Greek, Asian, Hispanic and Eastern European immigrants. Though Birmingham is Alabama’s largest city, it has retained inviting Southern traditions and fosters the importance of family and friends. Birmingham is widely known as the “Dinner Table of the South.” From James Beard culinary award winners to the world’s best barbecue, the city’s food culture has attracted national attention. For live theater and musical performances, check out Birmingham’s Theater District. The historic Alabama and Lyric Theatres are meticulously restored for performances, and, across the street, the Sidewalk Cinema features arthouse and independent films. And for those who enjoy the art of shopping, Birmingham is the state’s retail giant, featuring upscale malls and unique boutiques. For motorcar enthusiasts, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum has the world’s largest collection of antique and contemporary motorcycles and Lotus cars.

One of Birmingham’s biggest draws is its abundance of parks and preserves. Hike around the boulder outcroppings in Moss Rock Preserve, whose trails lead you by brooks and cascading falls. Railroad Park is Birmingham’s backyard park, where residents come together to celebrate a sunny day, enjoy a lunchtime stroll or attend a free evening yoga class. Another stop is the Vulcan Park & Museum. Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and forge, pays homage to Birmingham’s roots as an iron and steel town. He watches over the city from atop Red Mountain, which offers numerous trails for hiking, running and mountain biking, as well as a dog park and three breathtaking tree houses for families to enjoy, all while enjoying a bird’s eye view of Birmingham. There are also sports teams to cheer on when you are in town. Check out local favorites, including the Birmingham Barons baseball team, Legion soccer games, Birmingham Stallion USFL games and UAB football.
