George Ward, mayor of Birmingham in the early 1900s, commissioned an architect to design a home for him that resembled the Temple of Vesta in Rome. Mr. Ward called his home “Vestavia” – “Vesta” was the Roman goddess of hearth, and “via” means “by the roadway.” The area around his home later developed into the suburban city known today as Vestavia Hills — one of Alabama’s premier places to live, shop, work and play. A progressive, lively city that exudes fine southern hospitality, Vestavia Hills is a thriving, welcoming community.
Vestavia Hills offers a range of attractions for visitors of all ages. With numerous walking trails and scenic views, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy and take part in. Enjoy The Temple, the iconic landmark built as a garden gazebo to resemble the Temple of Sibyl in Tivoli. In 1976, the Vestavia Hills Garden Club relocated The Temple to its current location, which serves as the northern gateway to the city. For more outdoor enjoyment, The Library in the Forest is the state’s first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified library. This 35,000-square-foot library is located on nine wooded acres. This beautiful setting runs adjacent to the Boulder Creek Nature Trail and affords unique outdoor learning experiences for visitors of all ages. Vestavia Hills has a lively restaurant scene and offers three distinct dining and entertainment centers. While you’re in town, be sure to look for the Vestavia Hills Pigs, located near businesses throughout the community. Each pig is uniquely named and colorfully decorated by local school art classes and artists and represents the importance of shopping and dining locally. Lastly, the Vestavia Hills Dogwood Festival is the longest-running festival in the state – celebrating 60 years in 2024.
